Conservation
There are several projects funded by the European Commission under the LIFE Natura, aimed at the study and preservation of the most common marine turtle in the Mediterranean Sea, Caretta caretta.
The umbrella program LIFE Natura is a financial tool which allows a sustainable development of all these efforts, and promotes projects designed to recover and preserve natural habitats and to protect specific animal and vegetable species. It also aspires to create a European network of protected areas: the Nature Network 2000 .
